This is a sad truth that happens around the world.
In many countries around the world, prostitution is against the law, and those who practice and promote are punished severely. Unfortunately, there are countries who, despite being illegal, continue to practice prostitution.
The Philippines, like some other Southeast Asian countries, has an unfortunate reputation for prostitution and sex tourism. It’s a huge industry domestically with an estimated 800,000 men, women and, sadly, children working in the trade.
13-year-old Anna was no exemption, but she sold her body of her own volition. But given her that she grew up in a terribly damaged home, it was almost like she had no choice at all. Both her father and mother were addicted to drugs and drinking. And when high or drunk, they hit their children to the point wherein they break their bones after being beaten up so badly.
To get away from this kind of life, Anna would go out with friends who would drink and do drugs with her. She later on found a way to make money ‘easily’. She started offering her own body to men who were willing to pay for sexual favors, and according to Anna, she ‘serves’ at least 10 men a night.
She gets an approximate of P2000 a night, and gives everything to her mom to feed her siblings. Her mom then would give her just P20.
Anna’s mom doesn’t claim to approve of her daughter’s actions, but says she will not stop Anna from doing so. She says “[Anna] can think on her own.”
