It is not easy being old but it is especially difficult to take care of an old parent especially if you are advanced in age yourself. This is the peculiar yet inspiring case of Emerencia, a 72-year-old daughter who has a centenarian for a mother.
In a report by GMA News Online, Emerencia said that she perseveringly takes care of Emilia Cabotage, her mother of 104-years-old. According to the source, Emilia is very much prepared to die any second of her life. However, Emerencia continues to take care of her like how Emilia would to the former in her younger years.
Emerencia is a single woman who never married in her life. In Filipino terms, she would be a “matandang dalaga.” Their story was featured in an episode of “I-Witness,” a documentary aired on GMA Network. A video of it was uploaded on the official YouTube account of GMA Public Affairs, where it has gained 2,616 views and 143 likes as of this writing.
To quote from their video description:
“Nitong Mayo ay ipinagdiwang ni Lola Emilia Cabotage ang kanyang ika-104 na kaarawan. Ngunit kung ang karaniwang panalangin ng mga nagdiriwang ay humaba sana ang kanilang buhay, si Lola Emilia, mamahinga na ang natatangi niyang hiling.”
The particular episode was aired on October 7, 2017. The report stated that Emilia was the oldest woman alive in the whole province of Ilocos Sur. When she was initially approached by Kara David, the host of the show, the matriarch said, “Ayaw naman ako kunin ng Panginoon.”
“Wala na akong magawa, gusto ko nang magpahinga,” said Emilia. Her daughter was in the background, stroking and patting her head lovingly.
