A flash mob pertains to an activity involving a group of people who suddenly assembles in a public place to perform a number or a stunt.
What happens when a flash mob shows up at a wedding ceremony? This is what couple Patricia Doogan and Neil Swan encountered when they were exchanging their vows in St. Mary’s Church, Kincasslagh in Ireland.
According to a report in Independent, the couple was shocked when certain members of the congregation suddenly sang choruses of “How Great Thou Art” in a simultaneous manner.
The report described it as a “Catholic flash mob.” The incident was caught on video and uploaded by the YouTube channel “Liquid Media Video Production,” where it has currently gained a whopping amount of 6,733,208 views and 1,000 likes as of this writing.
Based on the video’s description, the so-called flash mob was actually organized by the bride’s friend “with a host of local celebrities.” According to them:
“The Bride and Groom – Neil and Tricia Swan, as well as many members of the congregation were left in tears and had everybody on their feet at the end.”
The people involved in the flash mob were singers Derek Ryan, Tony Kenny, Shaun Cuddy, Daniel O’Donnell, and Tony Allen. The report cited that the bride was stunned to see the singers and her wedding guests burst out into a song.
The priest, Father Pat Ward, also lent his voice and serenaded the couple before him. In an interview, the bride shared:
“It was a total surprise. The only two people who knew were my friend Gavin who was one of the singers and my sister Fiona who was bridesmaid. It was a huge surprise to everyone else at the church.”
She eventually found out that no rehearsals have taken place prior to that surprise, making the flash mob memorable. She added:
“Apparently there wasn’t an actual rehearsal, just a gathering in the church before the mass began to discuss it. We had the best day ever and absolutely everybody said that the church was their favourite part of the day.”
