Last weekend, the whole world was shocked by news of mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, US. The lone gunman shot and killed 58 people and injured about 500 others during an open-air concert in Las Vegas.
Amid the terrifying stories and chilling accounts of the survivors, it is hard to imagine that anything good came out of the deadliest mass shootings in history. But for one girl, she survived to live her tale because a man protected her. He is a US Marine.
Renee Cesario met Brendan Kelly a couple of hours before the Route 91 Harvest Festival. She invited him to join her and her friends, who all came from California for the festival.
Country music singer Jason Aldean was about to finish his set when the pair found themselves near the stage. They were dancing, until they heard something like fireworks.
They thought it was over, until it began again. This time, people knew there was something wrong.
On Facebook, the 23-year old Renee relayed her harrowing experience.
“It stopped, and Jason Aldean kept playing but then the shots fired again and he ran off the stage. Before I knew what was going on, Brendan tackled me down to the ground and covered me from the fire.”
The 21-year-old Marine shielded Renee from the gunfire. When the shooting appeared to stop, he told her they have to keep moving because it wasn’t safe where they are staying.
Brendan led the way, with Renee close behind.
“He kept telling me it was going to be okay and to keep running until we were safe,” she recalled.
Once she was safe from the bullets, Renee sent a text message to her sister using Brendan’s phone. She lost her phone while running so she informed her sister Jenn that she wasn’t hurt badly.
A few moments later, Jenn wholeheartedly thanked Brendan for his heroism.
Of course, netizens lauded the brave Brendan. His fellow Marine and friends aren’t surprised with his selflessness – a true embodiment of an American hero.
