They say that marriage is for two individuals who love each other. It is only done when a couple is sure that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. However, in some countries, people do not get to choose who they want to tie the knot with. In countries like India, Pakistan, Japan, China and Israel, arranged marriage is still practiced.
Some families believe that the only way they could protect their wealth is through setting up their child with a person whose family is of the same status. There are also those who are make pacts with friends so that their kids end up together.
However, this kind of set up has disadvantages. Just like what happened to a man in China after he saw his bride for the first time. He ran away and tried to commit suicide because she was ‘ugly.’
33-year-old, Kang Hu, was disappointed when his bride, Na Sun, 30, came to view. It was the first time that he even caught sight of her. He could not take how she looked so he said sorry and then escaped from the ceremony in Shiyan City, China.
Little did anyone know, he has done something terribly wrong.
A few hours after he ran away from the service, he was discovered floating in the river bank. He was passed out and was still wearing his clothes for the ceremony. The runaway groom was taken out of the water and immediately brought to the hospital.
Thankfully, he was in stable condition. Later, the man admitted why he decided to take his own life.
“I feel bad about what happened, but when I saw her, she wasn’t what I had expected and I realized she would be bad for my image. My parents had arranged this and I couldn’t see any way out apart from suicide,” Kang explained.
Here are some netizen’s thoughts on what the groom did:
Some want to see the face of the woman he ran away from.
Meanwhile, arranged marriages are not commonly practiced in China nowadays, but some still choose to do it. Families undergo different stages in this system.
First, the groom’s family would research about the reputation and the economic status of the bride’s family. Second, the families would talk about the dowry and the number of tables designated for each family. The third is the engagement where a dinner will be held and the engaged pair will exchange rings. The fourth stage is where the bride’s family receives a dowry from the groom’s family. Lastly is the wedding which will bind the couple.
