He always cleaned it, fixed it, and took care of it like it was the only treasure he had.

There are things we treasure more than our own lives. But keeping these things surpasses its material value, and reveals a more sentimental reason behind doing so. However, using the same clothes for decades can be a bit unattractive. Twitter user @922_riaru noticed that her dad kept wearing an old shirt, despite it being over 20 years old—and she wasn’t happy about it.

According to her, she noticed that her father would always clean his shirt, and always fixed it if ever it had a hole in it. “When that polo shirt gets a hole in it, he carefully sews it back together,” she said. “He wears it for any special occasion, be it a work study event or a trip out with the family.”

But as she was looking through her deceased grandfather’s belongings, she noticed several pictures of her father and her mother who passed away 18 years ago. In the photo, her father can be seen wearing the same shirt, while her mother wore a similar shirt with opposite colors. They were their honeymoon photos.

“I wondered why he kept on wearing that old polo shirt,” she told BuzzFeed News. “Why didn’t he just buy a new one? I never imagined that the polo shirt would contain such a special memory for him.”

Apparently, her mother had died 18 years ago after succumbing to cancer—and this was her father’s way of remembering her every day. The netizen believes it was their ‘couple shirt’.

On her tweets, she claimed that she now understands her father, and is now looking him at a different light.

“I always thought he was so ‘uncool’ for continuously wearing the same old polo shirt,” she said. “But now I think that I have to look after memories too. I will never throw away anything important of my parents or grandparents.”
