MANILA, Philippines— Veteran actor and Eat Bulaga host Joey de Leon is currently under public scrutiny after his controversial statement on mental illness, specifically depression. During one of their segments on GMA’s noontime show Eat Bulaga, de Leon dismissed depression as an illness, which offended many people online.

During the Juan for All, All for Juan segment aired on Thursday, October 5, TV show host Jose Manalo was interviewing Maria Cristina whose house they raided. In the emotional interview, the grievous woman revealed how her mother has been battling with depression for years.

Furthermore, Cristina said that her mother’s depression could be attributed to her old age, as what the doctors concluded. Below is an excerpt of their interview, as per Rappler:

It was at this moment when Joey de Leon spoke and addressed the issue.

On the other hand, one of his co-hosts, endorser and actress Maine Mendoza, shared her different sentiment on this issue. Mendoza emphasized the seriousness of this mental illness, and how to care for people who are suffering from it.

To which Joey de Leon replied:

“Hindi, huwag n’yo suportahan. Gawa-gawa lang nila iyon.

He broadcast this live on national television. The host is known for his tactless jokes in the past, but people were not expecting his stance on depression.
