MANILA, PHilippines—A 16-year old male tragically lost his life after he got dragged by a Philippine National Railways (PNR) train near España station Wednesday morning, September 20.
The victim was identified as John Genesis Monsayap Jr. of Sampaloc, Maynila. According to this report by GMA News, the teenager was on his way to school when he got hit and dragged by the PNR train. He was crossing the Honrades crossing between Firmesa and Sobriedad Street before the train reached España station, around 7:30 in the morning. The teen was apparently wearing a headset which resulted in him not being able to hear the warning of the train as it approached.
Monsayap’s body was dragged 150 meters away from the spot where he was hit, the reason why one of his legs got amputated. He was pronounced dead on the spot.
The body was identified by through his Manuel Roxas High School identification card. The brother of the victim, Christian Jerome Monsayap said that his brother was supposed to be on his way to his school in Pritil, Tondo, Maynila before the accident happened.
It can be remembered just a few months ago that a similar incident happened to a high school student named Joseph Punar. He was struck by a PNR train because he was also wearing headphones which blocked his hearing. The accident occurred around 5 in the afternoon at the railroad crossing in Vito Cruz, Manila last August 18, Friday.
Netizens took to Facebook to post their comments about people who wear headsets outside their houses, especially those commuting near railways.
