A jeepney is the most common mode of transportation for Filipinos. It has also been dubbed an iconic national vehicle since it has been in service within the Philippines for so long. As such, the jeepney permeates Filipino culture like no other form of public transportation.
It’s also the cheapest in terms of fare.
A certain Facebook user documented how he was inspired by a selfless jeepney driver. According to Joseph Mejia, he left his flash drive at home so he rode a jeepney to go back and get it. When he was finally inside the vehicle, he found out that he left his wallet behind in his haste.
What did Joseph do?
He admitted that the thought of not paying his fare and pulling a “123” (a colloquial term for leaving without paying) crossed his mind. Fortunately, he let his conscience sway him from making that decision when he noticed that the driver was an old man. He admitted to his mistake and approached the elderly driver.
Joseph said, “Manong, wala ho akong pambayad, naiwan ko ho ang wallet ko.”
The driver asked, “Ganun ba ‘toy?”
Joseph then relayed his situation to the elderly jeepney driver. He explained that he left his wallet behind because he was in such a rush therefore, he couldn’t pay the fare. He admitted that he felt ashamed that he even thought of pulling a “123.”
To Joseph’s surprise, the jeepney driver decided to give him money.
Joseph couldn’t believe it. He told the jeepney driver that he couldn’t accept the money. “Hindi na ho, sa inyo na ho iyan.”
The driver then looked Joseph dead in the eyes and said, “ihahagis ko to sa labas.”
In the end, Joseph narrated that he took the money out of gratitude. An excerpt of his status reads:
“Hi Lolo manong driver! Salamat! Kahit sobrang nakakahiya huhuhu!
Kaya kayo dyan, sabihin niyo lang kung wala kayong maipangbabayad, hindi yung gugulangan niyo pa yung mga nag tatrabaho mag hapon!”
