Senators are the country’s lawmakers, thus they’re expected to be honorable at all times. But like any human, they are also sometimes put under the spotlight, just like Senators Sotto and Pacquiao who often make headlines because of their sound bites. So it was highly unusual for Senator Sonny Angara to be on the spotlight, after his controversial tweet.

There is an ongoing Senate investigation regarding the proliferation of “fake” or misleading news on social media, which began on Wednesday, October 4. The said probe was handled by the committee on public information and mass media, with Senator Grace Poe leading the probe as the committee chairperson.

On the other hand, while Senator Nancy Binay was grilling Assistant Secretary Margaux “Mocha” Uson of Presidential Communications Operations Office on fake news, Angara posted this on his Twitter account:

The supposedly funny one-liner drew flak from the senator’s supporters. It would seem that ‘Chocolate’ refers to Binay’s skin color, a comment deemed foul by the netizens.

Th said tweet included a headline from DZMM Teleradyo that read: “Sen. Nancy Binay kay PCOO ASec. Mocha Uson: It’s high time for you to decide kung gusto mong maging ASec. o gusto mong maging blogger.”

Binay was on the investigating panel, while Uson was one of the resource persons for the Senate hearing. The female senator was questioning Uson’s personal blog, Mocha Uson, on Facebook. Uson is a known staunch supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte.

During the hearing, Binay quoted Republic Act 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, saying that, “we cannot use the excuse of doing things in our private capacities.”

But Uson merely replied with: “exercising my right to freedom of expression and speech.”

Amidst the hailstorm of criticisms, Angara immediately clarified that he is friends with Binay and they’re just joking with each other. Similarly, he was just exercising his right to free expression and speech.
