Fernando Kuehnel grew up surrounded by poverty and hardship. The former street kid and his two brothers were abandoned by their parents when he was just six years old. They were sent to an orphanage but that only served to cause them more suffering. Fernando was able to free himself from the orphanage when he turned 10. Afterward, he lived the life of a street kid, scavenging for food like many other impoverished children in the metro.

Fernando put the opportunity granted to him by his adoptive parents to good use. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and was summa cum laude in business administration majoring in healthcare. He now works for Novartis – a pharmaceutical company based in North America – as a clinical scientist.

Fernando’s success has given him a comfortable life. The former street kid now owns a luxurious Porsche Carrera! He currently calls Dania Beach, Florida as his home. He’s even a published author, having written about his experiences in a book titled “My Third Parents.”

In an interview with ABS-CBN’s “Balitang America,” Fernando said:

“You have to determine what success is to you. It doesn’t have to be millions of dollars. I tell my kids, there’s no problem that can’t be solved. You just won’t like the solution, but the problem can be solved. The takeaway is, you do have to work hard.”

Although he and his brothers were lucky to have been adopted by a loving family with the means to provide for them, we mustn’t discount the hard work and perseverance that he put into achieving his dreams.
