Despite all the protests against the intense violence permeated by fraternity hazing, President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that he was once a victim of this act as well. Recently, the nation was shocked when UST law student Horacio Castillo III lost his life after undergoing hazing rites of the Aegis Juris Fraternity.
The uncle of the victim also slammed the members of the fraternity and said some words taken from his Facebook post. According to a previous report, he wrote:
“I swear I’ll bring you justice Atio but the sad part you are gone and how I wish I should have just been the one because you have such a great future ahead of you. I love you Atio and same with Lega. Till we meet again.”
Now, in a recent report by GMA News Online, Pres. Duterte revealed that he was once brought to a hospital due to fraternity hazing. He said that he suffered hematoma as well – the same condition that Castillo has suffered. Duterte said:
“Kaya ako, three days ako umuwi kaagad ako. Pa-ospital. Massive hematoma.”
The president didn’t clarify if the hazing he went through was part of the initiation rites for the neophytes of Lex Talionis, a fraternity in San Beda College.
Rodrigo Duterte stated that fraternity members are usually more cruel to the sons of high-profile personalities. He recalled that when he was recruited, someone asked him if he was the son of the late Davao Governor, Vicente Gonzales Duterte.
Castillo was the son of Horacio Tomas Castillo Jr. and Carmina Castillo. No other current information was disclosed about their profession.
However, in a report by the Philippine Star, Carmina said that her son wanted to be a lawyer or a senator when he grew up. She lamented:
“How could they do this to my son? They’re heartless, they didn’t even take him to a hospital. Just tell me what they did to my son. I want them to narrate to me how they did it, how my son suffered. I want to see their faces… especially the one who brought my son to the sidewalk.”
