House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is expecting a colorful second year for Congress as Vice President Leni Robredo and Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is threatened with a possible impeachment case to be pursued by Alvarez himself.
Impeachment complaints were already raised against Robredo previously but no member of the House endorsed the complaints. The complaints were submitted to the Speaker’s office and now Alvarez speaks up about the possibility of bring it into the House.
“Let’s understand the President. He cannot impeach anyone. He cannot impeach the Vice President or the Chief Justice. But we in Congress, especially the House, have the exclusive right to impeach the Vice President, the Chief Justice, the justices of the Supreme Court and [officials of] constitutional bodies,” Alvarez said.
Robredo’s previous impeachment complaints were based on her alleged betrayal of public trust after publicizing her video message to the United Nations about a palit-ulo scheme in the government’s drug war.
As for Sereno, reports have cropped up that she bribed the Court of Appeals (CA) to overrule the House on the “Ilocos 6” alleged to have misused tobacco excuse funds in favor of Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos.
Alvarez underlined the importance of securing the veracity of the reports and complaints against the two political figures.
“Before I file that, I need to complete all the supporting documents. Like the case with the Chief Justice, once the documents are ready, I will not hesitate to file,” the Speaker said.
