In order to become a licensed professional, you need to pass a board exam. These kinds of exams are administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). One of them is the Mechanical Engineering Board Exam. Usually, the identities of topnotchers are reported on the news but this particular Mechanical Engineering topnotcher caught the public’s attention because of his background.
According to ABS-CBN News, he is Jay Nelson Corbita. Jay’s father, Nelson Corbita, was a janitor in an elementary school. In 2013, he had to retire early from his job in order to pay for Jay’s education with his own retirement pay. The report noted that Nelson’s heartfelt sacrifice paid well, as Jay topped the Mechanical Engineering Board Exam.
Jay graduated with Summa Cum Laude at the Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City on March 2017. Since elementary, he was a consistent honor student. Jay shared in an interview:
“I felt pressured while taking the exam because I know other people expected me to top it. But I told myself that even if I will not top the exam, at least I knew I did my best to pass it.”
Jay earned a rating of 92.20 percent in this year’s Mechanical Engineering Board Exam. This made him the first mechanical engineering graduate of Xavier University to top the boards.
The report cited that only 3,517 out of 5,098 mechanical engineering board takers have passed the licensure exam as administered by the Professional Regulation Commission this year.
The results of the licensure exam were released on October 3, 2017. According to the official website of the Professional Regulation Commission:
“The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 3,517 out of 5,098 passed the Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examination and 31 out of 105 passed the Certified Plant Mechanic Licensure Examination given by the Board of Mechanical Engineering in Manila, Baguio, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, Davao and Lucena last September 2017.”
