Over the last decade, Vietnamese building contractor Tong Phuoc Phuc has buried more than 10,000 aborted babies. In 2001, he accompanied his wife to a hospital and he saw young moms having their unwanted babies aborted. That was when he decided to give a final resting place for aborted babies.

“I believe these fetuses have souls. And I don’t want them to be wandering souls,” Phuc said.

Phuc asked the authorities to allow him to give aborted babies proper burials. When the Vietnamese government approved, he chose a spot on top of a mountain in the city of Nha Trang.

This is where he laid thousands of aborted babies to rest for 15 years. Tong said the cemetery he picked was not just a place to be sad, but he hoped it’d be where women would be inspired to choose life.

Soon enough, Phuc aspired to save the lives of unwanted children.

Phuc’s genuine act of kindness eventually earned him nationwide recognition. The story spread throughout Vietnam, leading to many women asking for Phuc’s help. They opted to bear their children on the condition that they be allowed to leave their babies under Phuc’s care.

Phuc was reluctant at first given that his own family is poor. But eventually, he was able to establish an orphanage that has taken in over 100 unwanted babies. He also allowed mothers to stay at the place while they were still pregnant. These mothers can also go back to see their children once they become capable of taking care of them.

One mother shared that she was afraid to abort her baby. When she took her time to think about it, she met Phuc. She was three months pregnant at the time.

“I actually went to the hospital intending to get an abortion, but I was so scared. I decided to go home and think about it. Two weeks later, I met with Phuc,” she shared.

Despite insufficient funds for the Tong Phuoc Phuc Orphanage, Phuc vowed to never give up and take care of the kids for as long as he is able.

“I will continue this work till my last breath. I hope my own kids will continue helping people when I’m gone,” he said.
