Lots of things can be seen and encountered in the busy city of Manila. Apart from the usual tourist spots such as the Rizal Park, the National Museum of the Philippines, and Intramuros, the city also has numerous quirks. One such peculiarity – in the form of a dog – was spotted near the LRT-1 Central Station.
According to our very own Facebook page, a netizen named Sef Isred shared two pictures of a dog sitting near the LRT station entrance while its owner was resting. The description said that the incident’s exact location was right in front of the University of Manila.
The pictures provided by Isred showed that the dog was begging for money while a note was placed in front of it. The text was impossible to read from the angle of the photo but it was quite evident that the dog was asking for help.
Eventually, the pictures spread all over social media and garnered mainstream media attention. In a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the dog seen on the viral LRT photos was named “Blackjack.” According to the source, a netizen named Dessa Andres saw the dog and took a video of him.
The report read:
“At first, she was perturbed when she saw the dog dancing with a basket filled with coins. But when she returned to the station after shopping, she interacted with the dog’s trainer, a young boy who has high aspirations to finish college and become a veterinarian.”
It was revealed that the dog was asking for money for its owner’s allowance and other miscellaneous school expenses. Andres said in an interview:
“Tinanong ko kung paano yung pag-aaral niya. Sagot niya sa ‘kin, ‘Siya na nga yung nag-papaaral sa ‘kin, sabay turo sa aso niya.”
In an additional report by the Manila Bulletin, the owner is revealed to be fifteen-year-old Eddie. He said that the dog has helped him a lot. Eddie shared:
“Galing po ako sa school na pang umaga 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. [Tapos] ala una (1:00 p.m.) hanggang 5:30 p.m. po kami dito sa may UDM (Universidad De Manila). Si Blackjack kahit aso po ito tinuturing na po kapatid and best friend.”
